Masked Wolf didn’t always have the distinct sound you hear on “Astronaut in the Ocean” or even the stage name Masked Wolf. I was a massive G-Unit fan when I was young,” he said.

I got like slapped in the face with Eminem, Kanye, G-Unit. I was into poetry and ballads and stuff like that and it just eventuated to me finding hip-hop. “I never said that ‘I want to be a rapper,’ like that’s not how it started. “So what made you want to start rapping? Can you tell us about your beginnings?” we asked. With such a well-crafted and well-received hit under his belt, we found it important to explore Masked Wolf’s start as a rapper.

Trying to make it in the scene in Australia, and then all of the sudden one song changes your life, you know? It’s just crazy,” he explained. Because I was that artist that grinded for over a decade. On the latest episode of the Rockstar Experience podcast, we asked how he’s been with all his newfound success and the changes “Astronaut in the Ocean” has brought to his life. In fact, he’s been grinding for over a decade. With so little known about him, it feels like he came out of thin air with one of the hottest songs of the year, but Masked Wolf is no overnight success story. With a popping remix of the track, featuring G-Eazy and DDG, out now and a project on the way, the 30-year-old Australian native is going nowhere but up from here. Despite being released in 2019, the song became a massive sleeper-hit earlier this year thanks to TikTok and internet virality as a whole. ‘Fallout’ is a killer song, addictive in almost every way, with enough to please just about anybody.Masked Wolf has one of the biggest songs of the year with “Astronaut in the Ocean,” and if you think you haven’t heard it yet, you have. The two brought each other contrast that would’ve never been imagined until it happened, and the world is surely grateful for it. Bring me the Horizons’ chameleon nature of blending into any sound they’re given is incredibly admirable, and Masked Wolf’s performance served the song perfectly, especially in its more hip-hop oriented sections. ‘Fallout’ is a wonderful collaboration between two very different sets of artists.

The song closes full circle, with the lower-octave, calmer delivery of the chorus fading the song away. The bridge that follows erupts even more, showing signs of the deathcore roots of Bring me the Horizons, guttural vocals and all. Oli takes his voice up an octave, reaching those emotions that the song needed, with that signature metal grit.

The song continues with its verse-chorus structure and comes to what feels like a climax in its next chorus. An explosion of rock instruments, such as blaring electric guitars, crashing drums, and thick bases, come into play, giving context for the chorus to follow. Masked Wolf’s consistent flow, using breaks and speed-ups to keep it interesting, drives the song forward very dynamically, bringing the song to the chorus once again. Masked Wolf enters the soundscape for the first verse, his raspy voice serving the tone of the song excellently. Oli Sykes gentle delivery of the chorus’ melody sets the tone for the song, that eerie edge that BMTH usually brings. The song, as it starts, seems extremely hip-hop through and through, and that’s definitely the dominant tone, for the first half at least. Veering in another new direction, like Bring Me the Horizon have done from the beginning of their career, ‘Fallout’ featuring Masked Wolf lets the two groups explore a whole new array of sounds, complimenting each other beautifully.
